The business, renowned for its handcrafted recliners, sofas, and adjustable beds, has over 55 years of excellence in British furniture manufacturing. On a recent trip to visit them, Joanna Privett, Membership Manager, met up with John Williams, Health & Safety Manager, who gave her a tour of the site.

Founded in 1968 and still owned by the Burrows family, HSL is a proud example of how tradition, innovation, and craftsmanship can thrive together in a modern business, it has grown into a company that employs over 500 people, all dedicated to producing high-quality, ergonomically designed furniture that supports health and wellbeing. Their signature products—luxury recliner chairs, supportive sofas, and adjustable electric beds—are tailored to meet the needs of customers.

HSL’s manufacturing facility is a large area where there is a hive of activity, although they have a mass production line, each piece is made to order.  Touring around the factory, it was a hive of activity, everyone industriously working away on their item. The company’s dedication to British manufacturing was also spotlighted in an episode of BBC’s Inside the Factory, showcasing the meticulous process, and this was evident to me too.

Over the years, HSL’s mission has remained constant: to improve lives through better furniture. Their designs are informed by consultations with occupational therapists and health experts, ensuring that their models support posture, mobility, and comfort. This health-focused approach has made HSL a trusted name among older adults and those with mobility challenges, offering not just furniture, but a better quality of life.

Despite its growth, HSL remains deeply rooted in family values. The Burrows family continues to lead the company with a hands-on approach, fostering a culture of care, respect, and community. This ethos extends to their workforce, many of whom have been with the company for decades. When I arrived the office staff were in the middle of a long standing service celebration party!

HSL’s commitment to sustainability and ethical practices also reflects its forward-thinking mindset. By sourcing responsibly and minimizing waste, the company is helping to build a greener future for British manufacturing, their dedication to sustainability is outstanding.  Hats off to HSL, long may they continue to thrive.
