Future of Furniture Winners 2026
Our 2026 industry award winners highlight excellence in sustainability, education and training, ESG reporting, and individual leadership across the furniture sector.
The awards were presented by the British Furniture Association (BFA) at the Furniture Component Expo, celebrating businesses and individuals shaping a more sustainable, skilled, and transparent industry.
Excellence in Education
Winner: ercol
Family-owned brand ercol was awarded the Excellence in Education accolade for its proactive, multi-tiered approach to developing the next generation of furniture makers. With factory management built on a foundation of traditional apprenticeships, ercol revamped its recruitment pipeline in 2021 by developing extensive school partnerships, hosting dedicated Apprentice Open Evenings, and participating in regional skills events.
Offering qualifications ranging from Level 2 to Level 6 across machining, assembly, design, and production control, ercol achieved impressive engagement—receiving 60 applicants for five positions in 2025, leading them to expand the cohort to eight. Through structured technical mentoring, peer-to-peer learning, and industry trailblazer leadership, ercol continues to set the benchmark for talent attraction and skills retention.

Excellence in Sustainability
Winner: Whitemeadow
Leading UK upholstery manufacturer Whitemeadow secured the Excellence in Sustainability award for its comprehensive, long-term net zero strategy that balances environmental impact with commercial viability. Grounded in cross-functional governance, Whitemeadow's phased decarbonisation plan includes a three-year rollout of solar PV systems across its estate, backed by 100% renewable energy contracts.
Whitemeadow has embedded circularity across its operations by targeting site-wide biomass heating systems by 2030—using waste wood to eliminate gas heating and reduce Scope 1 emissions by at least 45%. Operational improvements such as installing cardboard and plastic balers, alongside achieving ISO 14001, ISO 9001, ISO 45001, and FSC accreditations, demonstrate their holistically structured commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

Excellence in ESG Reporting
Winner: DFS Group
DFS Group earned the Excellence in ESG Reporting award for its clear, transparent, and comprehensive communication of its sustainability roadmap across Environmental, Social, and Governance dimensions. Guided by its "Sofa Cycle" lifecycle framework and SBTi-validated near-term and net-zero targets, DFS Group delivers detailed reporting across its entire value chain.
The submission stood out for its objective assessment of complex challenges, such as addressing Scope 3 emissions through supplier engagement campaigns ("In This Together"), pilot Digital Product Passports, and UK site biodiversity assessments. Coupled with strong governance linking carbon reduction to executive remuneration and an inclusive "Everyone Welcome" workplace culture, DFS Group sets a clear example of accessible, rigorous corporate disclosure.

Sustainability Champion
Winner: Jacob Lane, Silentnight
Jacob Lane, Materials Research and Knowledge Manager at Silentnight, was named Sustainability Champion 2026 for his science-based leadership and transformative impact on product sustainability. Joining via an Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), Jacob played a central role in guiding Silentnight to B Corp certification in November 2025 and managing their SEDEX SMETA 4-pillar audit.
Jacob’s six-year research on fire chemistry with the University of Central Lancashire has driven conversations on reducing harmful flame-retardant chemicals while maintaining fire safety, helping push the wider industry toward a circular economy. From embedding carbon data directly into bills of materials to leading cross-departmental waste reduction initiatives yielding significant operational savings, Jacob exemplifies data-driven, collaborative sustainability leadership.
