Joanna Privett, Membership Manager, travelled to a truly stunning part of North Yorkshire to visit Hill Cross Furniture. What began as a small, family-run venture in North Yorkshire has grown into a globally recognised supplier of contract furniture, serving some of the UK’s most prestigious venues.
Hill Cross Furniture was founded in 2000 by Richard Barker and Jake Bailey on a working family farm in North Cowton, North Yorkshire. The business was established to meet a growing demand for high-quality contract furniture in sectors such as hospitality and healthcare.
The company’s very first project—delivering handcrafted furniture to Swinton Estate in a cattle wagon—captures the entrepreneurial spirit that defined its early days. This blend of determination, craftsmanship, and personal service laid the foundation for what would become a leading name in the industry.
Over the past 25 years, Hill Cross has expanded rapidly, evolving from its rural beginnings into one of the UK’s largest independently owned contract furniture suppliers, employing more than 50 people and operating on a global scale.
From supplying local hospitality venues, Hill Cross Furniture has grown to work with high-profile clients including Kensington Palace, global restaurant chains, luxury hotels, and even Formula 1 venues.
Despite this growth, the company has remained firmly rooted in its family values and countryside headquarters. This unique combination of global reach and local ethos has allowed Hill Cross to build strong, long-term relationships with clients across multiple sectors including:
- Hospitality (restaurants, bars, hotels)
- Healthcare
- Commercial spaces
- Leisure and entertainment
Their offering has also expanded significantly. Today, Hill Cross provides everything from chairs and tables to fully bespoke banquette seating and large-scale interior solutions.
Hill Cross Furniture operates in a highly competitive market, yet it continues to stand out thanks to a clearly defined set of strengths. These USPs are at the heart of its success. They offer an end-to-end service. From sourcing and manufacturing to delivery and installation, the company provides a fully managed experience.
One of Hill Cross Furniture’s strongest differentiators is its bespoke offering. The company specialises in creating made-to-measure furniture tailored to exact project requirements, and they work collaboratively with designers and clients to bring ideas to life. This flexibility is particularly valuable for hospitality and high-end commercial projects where individuality is key.
What stood out to me is their commitment to manufacturing sustainably, it is a core pillar of the Hill Cross brand. The company is already carbon neutral and has set a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2035, and have an accreditation with BFA partner, Planet Mark. Initiatives such as tree planting and the development of eco-conscious product ranges demonstrate that sustainability is not just a marketing message, but a genuine long-term commitment.
At its core, Hill Cross remains a family business committed to strong relationships. Its collaborative approach, flexibility, and dedication to customer service are frequently cited as reasons clients return project after project. This people-first mindset gives the company a competitive edge in an industry where trust and reliability are crucial.
The story of Hill Cross Furniture is one of steady growth, strong values, and a clear understanding of customer needs. Its journey from a small rural start-up to an international supplier highlights the power of combining traditional craftsmanship with modern business practices.
With its strong USPs—bespoke design, end-to-end service, sustainability, and customer focus—Hill Cross Furniture continues to set itself apart in the competitive contract furniture market, and we are very proud to have them as part of our BFA community.
